Study of some Carduus species, revealed the identification of flavonoids, lignans, quinic acids, coumarins, and alkaloids (Bain and Desrochers, 1988; Li et al., 2014).
A total of 69 compounds were identified from Carduus acanthoides, including 35 flavonoids, 17 quinic acids, 7 phenolic acid glycosides, 5 phenylethanoid glycosides, 3 coumarins, and 2 phenolic acids (Li et al., 2014). Five isoquinoline alkaloids, crispines A-E, were isolated from Carduus crispus (Zhang et al., 2002c).
A coumarin-hemiterpene ether [6-(3,3-dimethylallyloxy)-7-methoxycoumarin, was isolated from Carduus tenuiflorus (Cardona et al., 1992a).
Carduus acanthoides is a traditional Tibetan herbal medicine for the treatment of hematemesis, hematuria, and menorrhagia (Li et al., 2014).
Pharmacological studies have shown that extracts of Carduus plants have anticancer, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antibacterial activities (Li et al., 2014; Hassan et al., 2015).
