Berberis spp. are used to refesh and cool fever, as stomach and hepatic tonic and for treatment of mouth infections (Torres et al., 1992).
Berberis aristata is considered to be an indigenous source of medicine, to have stomachic, astringent, antiperiodic, antipyretic and diaphoretic activities. Moreover, it has been employed successfully to alleviate jaundice, periodic neuralgia, intermittent fever, painful micturition and enlargement of the spleen.
Furthermore, the crude drug (alone or in combination with other ingredients) has proved its efficacy in the management of allergic conjunctivitis, acne vulgaris, rheumatic pain, premature ejaculation, leucorrhoea, inflammation, fungal infection, coccidiosis and viral hepatitis (Gilani and Janbaz, 1995)..
