Commelina africana is used traditionally for irregular menstrual flow (Agunbiade et al., 2012).
In Uganda, it s used to Induces abortion (inserted adjacent to the cervix to induce it to dilate) (Kiguba et al., 2016).
In Nigeria, slimy aqueous extract from the leaves is taken orally when patient is stationary; taken during delayed labor (Attah et al., 2012).

Aqueous extracts from C. africana induced significant sustained increases in human myometrial smooth muscle cell contractility (uterine contractility to facilitate childbirth) (Attah et al., 2012).
The plant extract exhibited hypoglycemic effect (Agunbiade et al., 2012).
