description

The genus Rhazya comprises only two species viz. Rhazya orientalis and Rhazya stricta.
Exentensive work has been carried out on the constituents (particularly the alkaloids, as mentioned below) of Rhazya stricta.

Evans et al. (1968a) isolated picralinal, picrinine, vallesiachotamine and an indole of a dimeric type from Rhazya orientalis.
The occurrence of 16,17,15-20-tetrahydrosecodine in Rhazya orientalis has been also proved (Brown et al., 1970).
Tabersonine was the major alkaloid (0.08% dry weight) of the seeds of the same species (Zsadon et al., 1971c).
In the studies involving ~ 60 populations, mainly 15 yr old, average total alkaloid contents of follicles of Amsonia illustris, Amsonia angustifolia, Amsonia tabernae-montana, Amsonia salicifolia, and Rhazya orientalis were 1.30, 1.36, 1.69, 1.72, and 1.53%, respectively and tabersonine contents of the seeds of the respectively. species averaged 0.72, 0.81, 0.76, 0.82, and 0.79% (dry wt.), respectively.
Alkaloid contents of all taxa decreased during development.
Annual alkaloid production of shoots, harvested monthly, for the whole vegetative period averaged 8.24 mg / shoot in Amsonia angustifolia compared with 4.09, 6.84, and 6.75 mg / shoot in Rhazya orientalis, Amsonia tabernaemonyana, and Amsonia illustris, respectively (Mathe et al., 1981).Several papers reviewed Rhazya alkaloids (e.g. Chatterjee et al., 1974; Atta-ur-Rahman and Fatima, 1982; Atta-ur-Rahman et al., 1989b; Gilani et al., 2007).
Six flavonoid glycosides, quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-[α-L-rhamno-pyranosyl(1→2)]-(4-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamno-pyranoside, quercetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)]-(3-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)]-(4-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)-[α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→2)]-(3-O-trans-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside, isorhamnetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-[α-L-rhamno-pyranosyl(1→2)]-(4-O-cis-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside and isorhamnetin 3-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl(1→6)-[α-Lrhamnopyranosyl(1→2)]-(4-O-trans-feruloyl)-β-D-galactopyranoside-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranoside , were isolated from the dried aerial parts of Rhazya orientalis (Itoh et al., 2002).
Secologanin was identified from the shoots of Rhazya orientalis (Dabi Lengyel et al., 1984).
