Misra and Tiwari (1972, 1973) isolated the following compounds from the roots and stems of Trianthema pentandra: hentriacontane, nonacos-1-ene-4-one (18), hentriacontol, sitosterol and stigmasterol glucoside Some basic elements, Al, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, P, S and Zn were detected in Trianthema pentandra (Pirzada et al., 2010).
Triamthema pentandra Linn. is used as an astringent in abdominal diseases, and also stated to produce abortion (Kirtikar and Basu, 1984).
The plant is traditionally used in India for different ailments, asthma, jaundice, skin infections, etc. (Jain et al., 2010).
The anti-ulcerogenic activity of the methanolic extract of the whole plant of Trianthema pentandra has been studied in aspirin-induced gastric ulcers in rats.
The extract did not show any decrease in the acid or pepsin content or any increase in mucin; however, it showed a highly significant decrease in ulcer in index (Akhtar and Ahmad, 1995).
Antifungal activity of crude solvent and aqueous extract of Trianthema pentandra, against dermatophytic fungi, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Paecilomyces varioti, Microsporum gypseum and Trichophyton rubrum revealed that ethanol and aqueous extracts were the most effective antifungal agents as compared to methanol, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts.
The plant has been found to contain considerable amount of elements with therapeutic effects in skin diseases (Pirzada et al., 2010).
Hamed and Elimam (2009) studied the effect of Rabaa (Trianthema pentandra) ash alkali on sesame (Sesamum indicum) straw chemical composition in the rumen of Nubian goats fed groundnut haulm.
They concluded that Rabaa ash alkali treatment of straw will improve the quality of sesame straw which could be adapted by the farmers.
