The identification of betalains from stem callus culture of Zaleya decandra has been reported (Radfar et al., 2012).
The root of Trianthema decandra Linn. is aperient and useful in hepatitis, asthma and suppression of the menses.
The roots are also specific in orchitis. The antidiabetic activity of Zaleya decandra in alloxan-induced diabetic rats has been reported.
Oral administration of the ethanolic extract of the root (200 mg/kg body weight/day) restored the levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, proteins, urea, creatinine, lipid peroxidation level and antioxidant enzymes significantly in diabetic rats.
Histopathological studies showed significant changes like necrosis and degeneration in the liver and pancreas of alloxan-induced diabetic rats.
Also, these hepatopathological abnormalities were found to be normalized after treatment with Zaleya decandra extract (Meenakshi et al., 2010).
The ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of Trianthema decandra is a potent analgesic acting centrally (Muthusamy et al., 2010).
The methanolic root extracts of flavonoids obtained from Trianthema decandra has potential bactericidal effect against bacterial strains that cause the skin diseases, such as Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa than other strains.
The extract partially inhibited the growth of enteric bacteria strains such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Salmonella paratyphi and Shigella dysentrica.
On the other hand, the growth of bacterial strains like Streptococcus pneumponiae, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus mirabilis and Proteus vulgaris were not inhibited by the extract (Sindhu et al., 2009).
