The genus is characterized by the presence of diterpenes as in Gnaphalium sylvaticum (Konopleva et al., 2006) and Gnaphalium gaudichaudianum (Meragelman et al., 2003), flavonoids for cudweed, Gnaphalium affine D. Don (Morimoto et al., 2003; Tachibana et al., 1995) and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives for Gnaphalium stramineum (Rastrelli et al., 1998).
Gnaphalium species are known in traditional medicine, for their different biological activities: antitussive, expectorant, antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulating, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and cytotoxic (Shen, 2007, Konopleva et al., 2006).
Some of the isolated diterpenes (Konopleva et al., 2006; Meragelman et al., 2003) showed cytotoxicity against human epithelioid cervical carcinoma cells (Konopleva et al., 2006).
Phenolic compounds showed antifeedant (Morimoto et al., 2003; Morimoto et al., 2000), anti-inflammatory (Rastrelli et al., 1998), and anti-diabetic (Tachibana et al., 1995) activities.
