description
The family Chenopodiaceae includes 103 genera and 1300 species.
It comprises many halophytic plants that constitute a significant part of the flora in arid and semiarid regions and in many cases represent supplementary or emergency feed during the prolonged seasons of drought.
These forages are grazed by sheep, goats and camels and usually contain sufficient crude protein and/or carbohydrate components and thus have significant nutritional potential.
Several species of the family e.g. Atriplex and Kochia spp., have considerable forage potential in arid and semiarid rangelands (Riasi et al., 2012).
