The family contains 18 genera and 44 species, tropical and subtropical regions (Boulos, 2000).
Most plants of this family grow in tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and Oceania, and nearly 20 species ranged in southwest China.
These dioeciously parasitic plants are normally growing on the roots of the evergreen broadleaf trees, especially in the family of Leguminosae, Ericaceae, Urticaceae, and Fagaceae (Wang et al., 2012).

In China, Balanophora species are widely used for clearing away heat and toxic, neutralizing the effect of alcoholic drinks, and as a tonic for the treatment of hemorrhoids, stomachache and hemoptysis (Wang et al., 2012). Balanophora polyandra is used as an antiasmatic (Podimuang et al., 1971). Balanophora abbreviata, Balanophora japonica Makino and Balanophora polyandra Griffith have been used as an antipyretic, antidote or anemic in China (Hosokawa et al 2004).
Balanophora involucrata Hook. f. & Thomson has been used medicinally for the treatment of irregular menstruation, cough, hemoptysis, traumatic injury, bleeding, dizziness and gastralgia in Yunnan Province, China (She et al 2013)..
