The average protein content of 11 Asphodeline species was 4.7% and ranged from 2.5% in Asphodeline damascena ssp. rugosa to 8.2% in Asphodeline turcica. The most abundant essential amino acids were threonine (5.7%), valine (6.0%), isoleucine (4.7%), and tryptophan (2.1%).
The amino acid composition of Asphodeline peshmeniana was well equilibrated according to FAO standards, but lysine and sulfur amino acids were at limiting concentrations in all the other taxa (Zengin et al., 2012).
Plants of the genus Asphodeline have traditionally used as medicinal plants in various parts of the world. Some species (Asphodeline damascena subsp. damascena and Asphodeline tenuior subsp. tenuiflora var. tenuiflora) are used to alleviate warts and heal wounds in Turkey folk medicine.
Likewise, Asphodeline cilicica and Asphodeline globifera are used as folk medicine for the treatment of earaches and hemorrhoids, respectively.
Also, several Asphodeline species (Asphodeline cilicica, Asphodeline damascena, Asphodeline globifera, Asphodeline lutea and Asphodeline taurica) are consumed as salad vegetables in Turkey (Zengin et al., 2016a).
