The family Asphodelaceae includes 17 genera and 759 secies (Boulos, 2005).Anthraquinones, chromones, flavonoids, alkaloids, in addition to polysaccharides and others have been isolated from species belonging to this family.
The chemistry of the different species, and in particular Aloe species have been reviewed.
Also, the occurrence and chemotaxonomic distribution of the anthroquinones and relevant compounds were reported. Over 130 compounds, belonging to different classes including anthrones, chromone, pyrones, coumarins, alkaloids, glycoproteins, naphthalenes, and flavones, have been identified (Dange et al., 2000; Ombito et al., 2015).
