Phytomelatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) (Zohar et al 2011), phenolics (Alali et al 2007), proteins and amino acids (Izhaki 1993 and 1998) and heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn, Cd, Pb and Ni) (Sathiyamoorthy et al 1997) were detected in the plant.
The plant is traditionally used for human consumption in several countries e.g. in Jordan (Al-Qura’n, 2010) and Spain (Tardío et al 2006).
The herb is used in Spanish (Vázquez et al., 1997) and Maltese (Attard and Pacioni, 2012) traditional medicine as diuretic. In Palestine, it is used for kidney and urinary tract system and cancer (Ali-Shtayeh et al 2013).
The plant possesses antioxidant (Alali et al 2007) and antimicrobial (Ali-Shtayeh et al 2013) activities.
