Many species of the genus Leptadenia are used in India mainly as galactagogue in many pharmaceutical preparations and in folk medicine (Krishna et al., 1975; El-Hassan et al., 2003).
Leptadenia spartium is used in India in the treatment of gout and rheumatism (Iyer et al. 1974).
Leptadenia reticulata was reported as a stimulant and a restorative and also as useful in skin affections and wounds.
Intravenous administration of aqueous extracts of the stems was reported to induce a pronounced and prolonged hypotensive action.
The plant was clinically tested and found to be useful in the treatment of habitual abortion in women.
The antibacterial and antifungal activities were also studied (Chopra et al., 1969; Krishna et al., 1975; Patel et al., 1986).
The latex of Leptadenia hastata has been used as an anti-inflammatory and wound healing agent in the folk medicine (Nikiema et al., 1997).
